What is M.O.M.I.E'S TLC?

Mentors of Minorities in Education's Total Learning Cis-Tem - also known as M.O.M.I.E's TLC - was founded as a non-profit organization in the year 2000 in Washington, DC, in response to the horrific educational outcomes that far too many low-income inner city children experience. For example, the USA educational system is failing Black males, as evidenced by the fact that there are more Black males, ages 18-25, in prison than in college. As a response to this, M.O.M.I.E's TLC developed a 3-point strategy to address these urgent needs. Our vision is that one day, all children's genius will be awakened through a transformative educational experience. Our mission is to nurture the genius of children, and to develop a transformative system to bolster educational outcomes, whereby children will realize their inherent talents and grow up to reach their full potential. Ultimately, we aim to establish a model educational system that will improve educational results for children locally, across the USA, and subsequently, the world.

M.O.M.I.E's TLC was created by a group of community members who were moved by the current educational system that is failing too many at-risk children. These passionate activists, professionals and educators created M.O.M.I.E.'s TLC to improve the educational outcomes for disadvantaged children.

M.O.M.I.E’s targets at-risk children of color in the early primary and school-age years to provide long-term, holistic support at a critical phase of development.   M.O.M.I.E’s integrated approach to child development includes:

  1. Creative and culturally relevant out-of-school time programming for children, ages 5 to 10;
  2. Parent and community involvement and advocacy; and
  3. Development of cutting-edge, user-friendly educational tools and resources for families.

M.O.M.I.E's coordinates After School and Safe Haven Summer Camp Programs; Parent Engagement/Advocacy activities; Year-round Children's Gallery programming; and produces creative multi-media products like our youth-designed Children's Black History Arts Calendar.
